80년대 팝송-The Night Chicago Died(Paper Lace)

이 노래는 1974년에 발표된 노래이지만

한국에서는 70년대와 80년대에 걸쳐 유행한 곡이라 그냥 80년대에 넣었다.

 

가제트가 이 노래를 처음 접한 건 고등학교 1학년 때.

아직도 기억이 생생하다.

여름 방학에 RCY 여름 봉사활동을 주문진으로 가게 되었는데

봉사를 다 끝내고 숙식을 위해 빌린 인근 국민학교(그 때는 이렇게 불렀지) 강당에서

쉬고 있을 때였다.

그 때 2학년 선배가 묵직한 검정색 카세트 플레이어에 테이프를 넣고 이른바 잘 나가는 팝송을 틀어줬다.

대부분 비틀스이거나 존 덴버,사이몬과 가펑클이 주였는데 갑자기 처음 듣는 팝송이 흘러나왔다.

지금 소개하려는 The Night Chicago Died라는 노래.

그 강당에 있던 대부분이 처음 듣는 노래였다.

그 선배도 자기 형이 녹음한 거라 제목이 뭔지 몰랐던 것이었고.

 

그런데 곡이 경쾌해서인지 처음 듣는 노래치고는 익숙한 느낌이었다.

우리는 봉사 기간 내내 이 노래를 흥얼거렸고 봉사를 다녀와서 비로서 제목과 밴드 이름을 알게 되었다.

 

그리고 오랜 시간동안 잊고 있다가 아침에 추억의 7080 노래 묶음을 하나 선택해서 듣는데

Paper lace의 Love song이 흘러나왔다.

어! Paper lace!

다시 그 날의 기억이 났다.

시카고 다이드 어쩌구...

위 앨범 수록곡인 Billy -Don't Be A Hero도 유명한 곡이다.
